Route description

Start at Castleton State College

The bike tour itself starts at Castleton State College campus and first leads on South Street in Castleton. You will then leave the town and pass shortly after another the two rivers running into the lake. Soon you will again pass a part of South Street, continue however alongside Lewis Road. After some time you will get to a small pond, pass by cross Walker Road and keep following the small river until you reach the main road. Afterwards continue the tour towards Poultney.

 

From Poultney river to the Vermont's state border

When you reach Poultney you will pass three streets, namely Church Street, Main Street and Bentley Avenue and soon reach Poultney River, which is a great location for a rest. The trail will now lead out of Poultney and continuously passed rivers. After a few miles you will reach the state border between Vermont and New York. Consequentially you will leave Vermont and continue further on Prouty Road, which you follow until you reach Butler Road on the right.

 

Into Granville town center

Follow Butler Road for almost 2km/1,2mi until you get to Middle Granville and the junction to Depot Street. Make a right turn at the junction so you get onto Main Street, which you follow towards the river. Main Street will eventually turn into North Street, don't get confused just keep going until you reach Granville town center. In Granville follow Church Street across the river and turn left at Potter Avenue. At the next possible turn keep right into Brier Hill Road and reach the south part of Delware and Hudson Rail Trail after a few meters.

 

Back to Vermont and the end of the tour

Continue further alongside the main road until you leave New York and get back to Vermont. You'll be still biking through the borderland of the two states but always keep biking towards West Pawlet. In Pawlet you will cross Indian River twice before you continue alongside the river. After a couples of miles you will pass Sawmill Road and Pawlet Road. While you keep follwing the river you will eventually get into the huge area of Rupert Toen Forests. Now you will have to follow the trail through woods until you reach the final destination of the tour in Rupert.

You can always take a detour from the actual trail to get a closer look at the lakes you will pass and enjoy the beautiful nature of Vermont.

Getting here

By car: 

Easiest way to get to the starting point in Castleton is by car. Therefore take route 4 towards Ruthland and take exit 5. Now continue west on route 4A and turn left at the first possible turn, to get onto Seminary Street. Shortly after the local College turn right and drive towards the parking lot. There will be parking for visitors of the trail.
