What street are you thinking of when you think about the most famous one in Paris? Of course, the Avenue des Champs Èlysée! The Avenue in the eighth arrondissement of Paris connects the Place de la Concorde with the Place Charles-de-Gaulle on which the Arc de Triomphe is placed. The Avenue is often to be mentioned as the most glamorous street and the shopping mile of Paris, as prestigious companys like Louis Vuitton or the parfum manufacturer Guerlain have settled here.

The street is also the residance of the President of the French Republic, as the Elysée Palace is situated here. The Avenue Champs Élysées is the biggest of the twelve streets that lead their way into the Place Charles-de-Gaulle. Due to the enormous width of the street, the avenue is often the place for great military parades such as the one held on the Bastille Day, the most important national holiday in France. Furthermore, there are many big parties here during New Years Eve. Particularly spectacular is the avenue throughout Christmas time when the entire Avenue des Champs Élysées sparkles in many bright lights.

The story of the Avenue goes back to the year 1667, when it was commissioned by Louis XIV. as a second promenade, that would run parallel to the Cours-la-Reine.

Nowadays, the Champs Élysées is amongst the biggest arterial roads of Paris and is placed on the historic “Axe historique”, a line of monuments, buildings and thoroughfares that extends from the city center to the west. The beginnings of the Avenue lie in the start of the garden construction of Tulieries. Back then a small street was initiated that would become more and more important over the years and would flourish in one of the most famous streets in the entire world.
