Berlin TV tower is a 368m high transmission tower in the heart of Berlin and counts as Germany's tallest building. You can find the tower in Berlin's district Mitte right between Marx-Engels-Forum and Alexanderplatz square. On weekends and during public holidays, the tower is one of Berlin's most popular sights. To avoid long queues, purchase your tickets online.

Restaurant and observation deck

Both the observation deck and the restaurant are 208m above the ground and offer an astonishing view across Germany's capital. High speed elevators are sending more than 1.2 million vistors per year up to the observation deck. Riding the elevator at a speed of 6m per sec is the first highlight of your visit at the tower (the ride takes 40 seconds).

Panoramic view across Berlin

When you reached the observation deck you have the choice between walking around on your own or getting a table at the "Sphere" restaurant. As the restaurant is turning around its own axis within 1 hour approximately, a sightseing tour is included with the dinner. Brandenburg Gate, Siegessäule, Regierungsviertel (government district), ... the tower provides a great view of all the main sights of Berlin.

To demonstrate the strength and efficiency of the socialist party system, the GDR party instructed to plan and build the Berlin TV tower in the 1960s, which today shapes the skyline of Berlin. At first the tower was planned to be built at Berlin Müggelbergen. Unfortunately, it turned out that this site was in the middle of the approach path of the airport Berlin Schönefeld which was also planned to be built during that time. So the party was literally forced to choose the beautiful site in the middle of Berlin to build the tower. The opening ceremony took place on October 3rd 1969.

Since the German reunification in 1990, the tower is a symbol for the reunited Germany, as it provides guests with a great view both across East and West Berlin. Today the tower is among Germany's most popular sights, attracting more than 1.2 million vistors per year.

How to get there

The most convenient way to get to the tower is by urban railway or subway. The following bus lines and  railway lines are stopping at Alexanderplatz:

  • Bus: TXL, M48, 100, 200, 248, N5, N8
  • Urban Railway: S5, S7, S75, S9
  • Metro: U2, U5, U8
