The Altamira National Museum and Research Center dedicated itself to protect and present the Altamira Cave and its one of a kind wall paintings from prehistoric times to the public and inform the visitors about its origin and history in the best way possible.
The museum was first opened in 1979 and is ran by the Spanish Ministry of Culture. Since then the museum enjoys great popularity and is visited by about 250,000 people each year.
